pretty good deal, almost perfect

yesterday i finally checked out Kilo, you know, the AI Coding Agent that lets you use your own key? saving like 27% compared to other places is awesome, especially with how much I use Copilot. only thing is, i wish their docs were a little clearer on setting up the 'bring your own key' thing, took a minute to figure out.

Thinking of trying Kilo's VS Code extension for code completion and refactoring. Anyone using it? How does it compare to GitHub Copilot?

T techfreak 2 weeks ago ✓ Best Answer
I switched from Copilot a few months ago. Kilo's unit test generator is a game-changer for me, and the documentation generator is surprisingly good. Plus, the Bring Your Own Key access was a big selling point. I don't like my code being sent all over the place.

T techfreak 2 weeks ago
Not if you use BYOK and local models. That's the whole point for me.

P PoojaR 2 weeks ago
Good to know about BYOK. Does Kilo store your code then?

N NikhilS 2 weeks ago
I'm still on Copilot. Does Kilo have a free trial? Would love to test it out before committing.

G gamerraj 2 weeks ago
I think there's a free tier, not a full trial. You get some credits.
1
C coolboy88 2 weeks ago
Yes, they have a free tier with limited usage.

I've been using it for about a month. The context-aware code completion is pretty solid, and the automated refactoring tool saved me some time last week. It feels a bit more integrated with my local setup than Copilot, especially since I'm trying to use local LLMs with it.

Does it slow down your machine much?
2
R RahulK 2 weeks ago
Yeah, Kilo supports local LLMs. You just configure it in the settings. Pretty neat.

Local LLMs? How do you set that up?

Anyone got a Kilo Pass discount code that actually works?

C CodeMonkeyJake 1 month ago ✓ Best Answer
The student discount is pretty good if you qualify. I got it last month.

B ByteBender 1 month ago
Yeah, usually you have to verify through some portal.

D DevGuru99 1 month ago
How do you even get that? Is it on their site?

P PixelPusher 1 month ago
Check your email if you signed up for the beta. Sometimes they send little credit bundles.

I tried a few from coupon sites, all dead. Think early adopter pricing was the best bet.

Same. Kinda annoying.

Anyone know if the Kilo student discount is still active?

C CodeCadet 1 month ago ✓ Best Answer
Yeah, I got it applied last month for my Kilo Pass. Just had to verify my student email.

Worth it if you're in school.

I tried a couple weeks ago, didn't seem to work for me. Maybe I messed up the form.

Is Kilo CLI actually useful or just a gimmick?

S ScriptKiddiePro 1 month ago ✓ Best Answer
It's pretty solid for quick tasks and scripting. I use it for generating unit tests on the fly.

C CodeWhisperer 1 month ago
Different use cases. CLI is for automation, IDE for interactive.
2
T TerminalDude 1 month ago
Oh, that's interesting. Better than the IDE extension?
1
P Pythonista 1 month ago
I find the CLI faster for bulk operations.

I IDE_Lover 1 month ago
Never really got into it. The VS Code extension covers most of my needs.

Fair enough. Just curious if I'm missing out.

Does Kilo store my code? Super paranoid about that.

S SecureCoder 2 weeks ago ✓ Best Answer
No, they are pretty clear about local processing and BYOK for privacy.

K KeyMaster 2 weeks ago
BYOK is the key part for me.
1
F FreelanceDev 2 weeks ago
So it's safe to use with client projects then?
0
S SecureCoder 2 weeks ago
Yep, as long as you're careful with your own keys.
4
S SkepticSteve 2 weeks ago
They say they don't, but who knows for sure with these AI tools. Always a risk.
5
T TrustyTech 2 weeks ago
Pretty sure their docs address this, they use local processing for a lot.
8
P PrivacyPal 2 weeks ago
That's what I'm worried about.
